New York Red Bulls: Win the 2011 MLS Cup or Bust
MLS News
Friday, 14 January 2011 07:00

New York, NY—Now with the 2011 MLS SuperDraft over, the New York Red Bulls have made it clear that they have every intentions of being a team that will attack the net in the 2011 MLS Season.

With their draft selections of forward Corey Hertzog (R1; 13th pick), midfielder John Rooney (R2; 25th pick), defensive forward Tyler Lassister (R2; 30th pick) and midfielder Billy Cortes (R3, 38th pick) joining Thierry Henry, Rafa Marquez, Tim Ream, Dane Richards, Joel Lindpere and Juan Agudelo, the New York Red Bulls are in position to win their first MLS Cup.

While the 2010 MLS season was a memorable one for the Red Bulls, 2011 minus Juan Pablo Angel has yet to be written. Last season, Red Bull Arena opened for its inaugural season.

Along with the acquisitions of Joel Lindpere, Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez, the New York Red Bulls went from worst team in MLS to the best team in the Eastern Conference.

Helping lead last year's transformation from worst to first was the excellent goalkeeping of Bouna Coundoual, the emergence of Dane Richards, the maturing of Tim Ream and Tony Tchani, and the surprise play of Juan Agudelo. However, it wasn't enough as they were eliminated by the San Jose Earthquakes in convincing fashion.

Despite the release of Juan Pablo Angel and the retirements of Mike Petke and John Wolyniec, the Red Bulls enter the 2011 MLS season as a team consisting of veteran World Class caliber players and young but aggressively fast players who aren't afraid of attacking the net.

With all that talent, there's no reason why the Red Bulls should be a mediocre defensive team in 2011 who squeaked to the Eastern Conference title in the regular season. In order to be taken seriously, they're going to have to win convincingly from the very beginning and maintain that pace up until the playoffs.

Aside from player talent, the Red Bulls play in the best Soccer Specific Stadium in the country with rabid supporters group hoping to see their beloved team win their first championship. Anything less will be a disappointment and another remainder that the Red Bulls have never won a MLS Cup.

2011 MLS SuperDraft: Creating More Opportunities for All
MLS News
Friday, 14 January 2011 05:21

Baltimore, MD - As soon as the Vancouver Whitecaps FC selected Omar Salgado as their number one pick for the 2011 MLS SuperDraft, the 2011 Major League Soccer year officially kicked off and entered its 16th year.

With boisterous supporters clubs such as the ones from the New York Red Bulls and D.C. United, and the Philadelphia Union keeping things entertaining with their chants and enthusiasm, expectations are high this season for their fans.

Many of these MLS teams should be commended for providing transportation for their fans so they'll have the opportunity to witness this day. It's fantastic way to not only show appreciation for their fans' loyalty, it also creates an opening on how both parties can promote their team to others.

For some clubs, anything less than the MLS Cup will be considered a bad season. For others, winning 10-12 games will be considered a successful season. And in the case of the Portland Timbers and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, their inaugural seasons taking place is already a success.

With the Houston Dynamo being the last MLS team to repeat as champions, many will wonder if the Colorado Rapids will repeat or if MLS will have a new champion to declare at the 2011 MLS Cup.

The one thing which makes the MLS SuperDraft unique is the fact that majority of the players drafted are educated enough to have another career outside of soccer.

For as much as critics complain about the quality of a player's Soccer Education, they should take a moment to commend the maturity level of most of these players.

How many players have we read about from other countries who careers were ended due to injury had nothing to fall back on? Or former superstars who have squandered their fortune because they weren't educated enough to manage their finances or educate themselves for another career once their playing days was over?

While most of the world class players have the opportunity to solely focus on soccer, many of the players drafted today were college students.

And while the money they may earn is no where comparable, at least they'll have the opportunity to continue with their personal education and growth.

Philadelphia Union Fans: Be Grateful for Bimbo Bakeries USA
MLS News
Friday, 14 January 2011 03:15

Recently Bimbo Bakeries USA became the official sponsor for the Philadelphia Union. With a four-year deal valued at $12 million, it's safe to believe that the players salaries will be covered during that that time.

What I found surprising is the verbal backlash that some of the Union fans had towards Bimbo's (pronounced "Beembo") commitment to the Union. They're making it sound that Bimbo Bakeries USA is synonymous with Playboy or Hustler.

For a city that's recognized for Rocky, booing Santa Claus, and their Philly cheese steaks, I never realized how politically correct and sensitive some of their fans are. I guess some of the Union fans would prefer having the Bimbo bear imprinted on their jerseys then the word itself.

Either that or some of the Union fans are simply racists. I've read some of your comments on Facebook and I don't see the humor in them. If you're all torn up about Bimbo Bakeries USA sponsoring your team, I wonder how some of you would have reacted if Goya Foods was the official sponsor of the Union.

I understand that the word "bimbo" has a negative connotation in our society and you the fans have a right to voice your opinions about it. However, it is also your responsibility to research the company and if you do so, you'll notice that they have different company logos.

At the end of the day, Union fans should be grateful that their team has a sponsor with a good reputation who's recognized for their global social responsibility.

Let's be honest, how many of you have taken the time actually to research the Bimbo company?

If you look at the other sponsors some of the other MLS teams have, you'll be grateful to have Bimbo Bakeries USA. Would the Union be better off having Herbalife, Amway, EA Sports, or XBox 360 as their official sponsor? Two of those sponsors are often questioned about scamming their distributors while the other two are often questioned about the type of violent games that they produce.

You decide.

MLS Superdraft 2011: A Fan's Perspective
User Rating: / 1
PoorBest
MLS News
Thursday, 13 January 2011 19:02

I've just returned from the 2011 version of the MLS Superdraft in downtown Baltimore, and first things first, permit me to clean the blood slowly trickling out of my eardrums.  This was quite possibly the loudest indoor venue I've ever attended, and I've seen Whitechapel at Ottobar.

Unbeknownst to myself (and perhaps a fair majority of MLS fans), the Superdraft has a long history of taking up residence in the Charm City, despite the closest team being a good 40 miles down the I-95 Corridor.  Every third year since at least 2005, Baltimore's downtown Convention Center has hosted MLS' Collegiate and Supplemental Drafts, and judging from the exceptional turnout today, it is a tradition which I can't imagine ending any time soon.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I first learned that the draft was visiting my adopted city; I've lived here for only three years, moving just after the last incarnation of the draft, and I can't remember ever seeing it on TV or anybody caring too much about it, to be honest.  I heard through Barra Brava and the Baltimore Brigade contacts that groups would be attending and meet-and-greets (drink-and-drowns) would be held at Pratt St. and Tir Na Nog for the respective groups, but what I didn't expect were the impressive numbers of fans from other MLS sides.

Northeastern sides were especially well represented, while fans of clubs west of the Mississippi were obviously tougher to spot, with the exception of the two darlings of the ball: Vancouver and Portland.

Apparently the Whitecaps took a gamble with their first pick, selecting Mexican export Omar Salgado over what many deemed to be more solid picks in Akron's Darlington Nagbe and Perry Kitchen.  I couldn't tell you, though; I hadn't heard of any of the players selected in the first round save Terps keeper Zac MacMath and Wolverine Justin Meram, who scored one of Michigan's goals in their upset of the Terps in this season's NCAA playoffs.

As a D.C. fan, I took particular interest in their third overall selection, the aforementioned Perry Kitchen.  More knowledgeable fans around me knew he liked to sit deep in midfield and could even play on the backline, so if he's actually any good, then it should be a fantastic pickup for Ben Olsen.

The story of the second round was undoubtedly John Rooney, little brother of England's Wayne, by NYRB, effectively cementing their place as the new Glamour Club of MLS.  I, for one, was not even aware Roo had a brother, much less that he'd ever even considered playing in America.  But as a (fairly) neutral observer of the goings-on in New York, I hope for the sake of the league that he produces and makes an impact.

In true journalistic fashion, I ducked out after things seemed to be petering down after the second round; the cold drinks at Pratt St. beckoned far too strongly for my parched mouth to resist.  I'd done nearly as much singing inside the convention hall as any given Saturday at RFK, and it certainly felt like it.

A small din arose just as I was leaving for UMBC forward Levi Houapeu, drafted by the Philadelphia Union.  Soccer fans in Baltimore especially have a particular affinity for Retrievers Soccer, and I've attended quite a few games at the underwhelming venue myself, so best of luck to him.

My overall experience of the draft was remarkable, certainly more than I'd expected.  The fact that it was apparently broadcast on ESPN2 is quite a bonus; perhaps you all caught a glimpse of this handsome mug at one point.

I'm not sure where next year's draft is, but I highly recommend anyone make a day of it if it happens to be anywhere near you, and hopefully make for an equally vociferous and electric atmosphere.

This Is the Los Angeles Galaxy: Chad Barrett
MLS News
Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:58

This is Part Six in a list of players that will be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy this season.

From one side of the border to the other, and back again.

The continuing adventures of well-traveled forward Chad Barrett have seen him make a statement with the Chicago Fire and the Toronto Football Club.

And now, in his seventh season in Major League Soccer, Barrett looks to finally strike gold as he returns home to Southern California, and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Hope that passport isn't expired while you're at it, Chad.

Chad Barrett was born on April 30, 1985 in San Diego, California. San Diego has a strong soccer tradition, with the San Diego Toreros and San Diego State Aztecs performing and holding their own in the West Coast and Pac 10 conferences, respectively.

One can witness the occasional international club or country friendly at Qualcomm Stadium, while at the Del Mar Fairgrounds in Solana Beach, fans can get a taste of the indoor game via PASL-PRO side San Diego Sockers.

Barrett first came into the limelight as a member of the UCLA Bruins, currently managed by Jorge Salcedo. In 2003, his freshman year, Barrett was named the Pac 10 Co-Freshman/Newcomer of the Year and was a second team All-Pac 10 selection. He was second on the team in goals with 10, assists with eight and points with 28, the latter being the most by a Bruin freshman since Joe-Max Moore's 32 points in 1990.

In 2004, Barrett was again named to the All-Pac 10 second team, racking up a team-high 10 assists, six goals, including three game-winning goals, and 22 points. All in all, Barrett left Westwood with a 34-6-3 record and 50 points, 16 goals and 18 assists to his credit.

As a youth player, Barrett played with the USA Men's Under-20 national team, scoring once in four appearances at the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship in the Netherlands.

The work Barrett put in as a college and youth international player saw him drafted as the third overall pick in the 2005 MLS SuperDraft by the Chicago Fire. He made his MLS debut on April 2, 2005 against FC Dallas, and his first MLS goal came on May 28 against Real Salt Lake.

Barrett finished his rookie year with one goal and four assists in 20 appearances and four starts.

It was a difficult year for Barrett in 2006, as injuries limited his playing time to nine starts in 16 appearances.

However, he recorded five goals and an assist while leading the Fire to the 2006 U.S. Open Cup, before undergoing season-ending surgery on September 15.

In 2007, with a renewed vigor, Barrett led the Fire in with seven goals while adding two assists. He was the only Chicago player to play in all 30 contests—25 of them being starts—to go with 1,983 minutes of action.

Midway through the 2008 MLS season, Barrett would be traded to Toronto FC, but not before recording 17 goals in 82 appearances. With his new club, he recorded a team-high nine goals.

In 2009, Barrett started 27 of 29 games for TFC, recording 2,069 minutes of action. Although he managed only five goals and three assists, Barrett was instrumental in securing Toronto the 2009 Nutrilite Canadian Championship, scoring a goal in the Reds' wild 6-1 victory over future MLS side Montreal Impact.

Last season, Barrett continued to add pain to the Impact's misery, opening his account in a 2-0 win over Montreal in the 2010 Canadian Championship.

What goes around seemed to come around for the San Diego native, as his first MLS goals of the year came in the form of a brace against his former club, the Fire, as part of Toronto's 4-1 win.

And in the 2010–11 CONCACAF Champions League Preliminary Round tie against C.D. Motagua, Barrett was instrumental, scoring one goal in each leg of TFC's 3-2 aggregate victory.

But it seemed that Toronto FC was going to be in for another disappointing season and, meanwhile, the absence of Edson Buddle meant that the Los Angeles Galaxy were short on attacking forwards.

So to patch up the hole, the Galaxy acquired Chad Barrett in exchange for allocation money on Jan. 13, 2011.

Whether or not he ends up becoming the quick fix the Galaxy desperately need in their attempt to gain back their firepower remains to be seen.

But with a U.S. Open Cup and two Canadian Championships under his belt, Chad Barrett has already proved to many naysayers that he can deliver in the clutch when needed, and he will look to add an MLS Cup with the Galaxy to his resume of accomplishments.

MLS Superdraft: New York Red Bulls Raise Eyebrows by Taking John Rooney
MLS News
Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:25

Wayne Rooney is one of the most famous, talented and controversial characters in world football. Entering the peak of his career with Manchester United and England, we are unlikely to see him move to Major League Soccer anytime soon.

One Rooney that is coming to America, however, is his younger brother John, who was drafted in the second round (25th overall) of the MLS Superdraft by the New York Red Bulls.

The midfielder/forward had declared his interest in coming to the United States after trials with Derby County and Huddersfield Town came to nothing. Prior to that, he spent two seasons at Macclesfield Town scoring 3 goals in 41 appearances.

John will be joining the Red Bulls alongside fellow 2011 draftees Corey Hertzog (first round, 13th overall), Tyler Lassiter (second round, 30th overall) and Billy Cortes (third round, 38th overall).

The selection of pacey forward Hertzog in particular should delight fans. The Penn State alum was the 2010 NCAA leader in goals (20), points (46) and points per game (2.09).

But it is not just his stats and performances that will endear him to Red Bull's supporters. His availability in the draft was due to his decision to turn down the opportunity to sign with New York's I-95 neighbors, the Philadelphia Union. Just another minor twist in the New York-Philadelphia sports rivalry.

New York will hope this crop of draftees will bring about the same success as the 2010 class, arguably the finest draft of New York's 14-year existence in the league.

Tim Ream came from nowhere to become a perennial started at center defense and played in every minute of every game en route to a Rookie of the Year nomination. Tony Tchani appeared in 27 games last season, with his talent continuously developing as the season wore on.

Conor Chinn showed his ability to score goals (3 goals in four games in the US Open Cup), where as Austin Da Luz and Irving Garcia has injury ridden rookie season, they both showed glimpses of their talent and potential.

The Red Bulls have the majority of their Eastern Division-winning roster back for the upcoming season, including the new signings (though not officially announced) of Englishman Luke Rogers, Norwegian Jan Gunnar Solli and Brazilian Marcos Paullo.

A deep squad was one of the reasons the club was able to turn around from the worst team in the Eastern Conference to the best. With that said, it could be difficult for their new batch of rookies to break into the starting 11 (unless the club once again continues its policy of selecting the "Baby Bulls" for US Open Cup matches).

The return of the reserve league this season will at least give the youngsters much more opportunity to develop in live matches and show their worth to the first team.

However, if all are capable of making it onto the newly expanded roster for the upcoming season and at least one can be the "out-of-nowhere" star that Tim Ream was, the second-year management team of Scandinavians Eric Soler and Hans Backe will be delighted with the draft.

The only thing this season that will delight the players, staff and fans, however, is if the new additions to the team are just what New York needs to tip them over the edge and onto their first MLS title.

Then, at least, John will join his brother Wayne as a Rooney with a league title to his name.

This Is the Los Angeles Galaxy: Hector Jimenez
MLS News
Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:12

This is Part Five in a list of players that will be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy this season.

Sometimes, staying local to go pro can be a good thing. It can be a blessing, and it can be the best thing that can happen to a young, aspiring player.

An example of that? Midfielder Hector Jimenez. And no, it's not the actor that tag-teamed with Jack Black in Nacho Libre. Not that guy.

I'm talking about a four-year letterwinner hailing from the University of California at Berkeley. This Hector Jimenez returns home to Los Angeles to play for a certain local team.

The team? Why, it's none other than the Los Angeles Galaxy. It's the culmination of a journey that began not too far from where it ended.

Hector Jimenez was born on Nov. 3, 1988 in Huntington Park, California. Huntington Park is just one in a number of small towns neighboring Los Angeles that have a rich soccer tradition.

Another of those cities is neighboring Bell Gardens, whose sports center is the home of the Chivas USA Under-23 youth side.

Jimenez spent a majority of his youth in Bell Gardens and flourished as a member of the boys soccer team at Bell Gardens High School. In his career with the Lancers, he was named team captain during his senior year and tallied 22 goals and 14 assists. As a sophomore, Jimenez was an All-Almont League selection.

As a youth club player, Jimenez played for Arsenal Football club, and helped lead the Gunners to several tournaments,  including the USYSA U.S. Under-17 National Championship, Surf Cup, Nomads Cup, Celtic Cup and Delco Cup. Arsenal also garnered Cal-South State Cup and Far West Regional honours in 2004 and 2005, while winning the Under-15 and Under-16 titles in those respective seasons.

Jimenez's work as a member of Arsenal gave him the nod to join the USA men's Under-17 national team in 2004 and 2005.

Cal's Kevin Grimes took notice of Jimenez's talent, and in 2006, he signed with the Golden Bears. In his freshman year, Jimenez started 16 games and led the team with six assists that season.

After redshirting his sophomore year, Jimenez experienced a breakthrough year in 2008.

That year, he was named an All-Pac-10 first-team choice and was a conference all-academic second-team selection while being named to the NSCAA Far West All-Region first team. Jimenez was ranked in the top 25 in assists for a good deal of his redshirt sophomore year, and he scored his first collegiate goal in a match against the Drake Bulldogs.

In 2009, Jimenez was again named to the All-Pac-10 first team as a midfielder. He was also named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 8 team and the Pac-10 All-Academic second team. Jimenez led the conference with nine assists, good enough for fourth on the school's all-time single season list.

In Jimenez's final season, he was tied for second on the team in assists with six and started all 20 games for the Golden Bears.

Jimenez was named to the NSCAA All-Far West second team while being named one last time to the All-Pac 10 first team. He also played for the Bay Area Ambassadors of the National Premier Soccer League during the collegiate offseason.

On Jan. 13, 2011, Hector Jimenez was selected at the 34th overall pick by the Los Angeles Galaxy in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.

Not famous famous, but almost famous is good enough for this young star. All right, when you have a team that has David Beckham and Landon Donovan in it, things might change for the better.

Nice work you did, Hector Jimenez. You're gonna go far, kid.

This Is The Los Angeles Galaxy: Paolo Cardozo
MLS News
Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:28
This is Part Four in a list of players that will be joining the Los Angeles Galaxy this season.
South America is a continent that, along with Europe, forms two traditional hotbeds of footballing talent. So many of the world's best superstars hail from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and all the other countries that make up CONMEBOL.
And for the most part, the Major League Soccer SuperDraft attracts talent from the best colleges and universities in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
However, it can also attract players who are outside of the mold, breaking it and setting a new precedent.
Paolo Cardozo is an example of a new precedent being set. Now more and more international players are being selected in the MLS SuperDraft in an ongoing effort to enhance the league's quality of play.
Cardozo, a Uruguayan attacking midfielder, came to America with a dream of playing in greener pastures. So he came to MLS, and for his efforts, has a chance to play with one of the more storied clubs in the league in the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Paolo Daniel Cardozo was born on June 9, 1989 in Montevideo, Uruguay. A city noted for the highest quality of life in Latin America according to a Mercer Human Resource consulting study, Montevideo is the home of the very first FIFA World Cup held at the storied Estadio Centenario.
Famous clubs from Montevideo include Nacional, Peñarol, River Plate and Defensor Sporting.
But it was in Argentina where Cardozo began plying his trade. From 1996-2008, he spent 13 years as a member of the youth teams of the more familiar River Plate side based in Buenos Aires.
His work with Los Millionarios caught the attention of Quilmes Atlético Club. In 2009, he joined the reserve team and was a runaway success as one of the team's top scorers.
In June 2010, Cardozo was signed to a full professional contract by El Cervecero in June 2010 after making one appearance for the first team on January 31 against Primera B Nacional side Boca Unidos.
However, he did not see much playing time, and so Cardozo looked to take his skills elsewhere.
After going on trial with the Columbus Crew last year, he signed with Major League Soccer with the desire to be selected in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.
He finally got his chance. On Jan. 13, 2011, the Los Angeles Galaxy selected Paolo Cardozo as the 16th overall pick in the first round of the SuperDraft.
With Edson Buddle leaving the team for greener pastures in Germany, the desire for more offensive firepower combined with a youthful feel has taken priority in Victoria Street.
Paolo Cardozo fits that profile. Don't be surprised to see this promising Uruguayan make his presence felt almost immediately in MLS.

David Beckham: What His Proposed Loan Move Means For MLS
MLS News
Thursday, 13 January 2011 14:55

Goldenballs is a man that requires no introduction. Undoubtedly one of the most recognised man on the planet, David Beckham's skills have earned him legendary status.

When he was just a young lad at United, everybody knew his name, and everybody wanted a piece of him. Then came the marriage to the Spice Girl, the celebrity status and the lifestyle to go along with it.

Becks joined the MLS with the LA Galaxy in the summer of 2007, and was to be an ambassador for the sport in the United States.

The move came at a time when many believed he was past his best, over the hill, and unlikely to make any impact as a player, but Beckham has proved his doubters wrong.

Beckham had a tough start to his MLS career, with injury set-backs from day one, and disappointing team performances by Galaxy, but over time, began to settle in. He became the player he was supposed to be, and lifted his whole team who still failed to qualify for the end of season playoffs.

It was this new found form, along with his performances for the England national team, that attracted interest from Italian giants AC Milan.

Beckham was supposed to be on loan from the end of the 2008 season, until the beginning of the 2009 season, but that loan was extended to July, which angered many Galaxy fans. Upon his return, however, the club improved dramatically and reached the playoff final, where they were defeated in a penalty shootout by Real Salt Lake.

But it was his next stint at Milan which really stirred controversy.

The move was supposed to help him in his bid for World Cup selection, and he played well, and was almost certain to make it to the World Cup, before suffering a serious injury which would sideline him for 6 months.

Bad news for Beckham, bad news for England and bad news for Galaxy.

Beckham has since recovered from the injury, and played the last few games of last season for Galaxy. Now, with England coach Fabio Capello feeling he is possibly too old for England selection, he looks to defy the odds again.

How?

With another loan move, this time to England, where he is currently training with Tottenham Hotspur.

Galaxy have informed Tottenham that he can play, but will be required in LA in February for pre-season training. Tottenham are looking for an extra month, and want to keep Beckham until March. Both clubs have a valid reason. Galaxy want to avoid another injury to their prized asset, and Tottenham feel such a short deal is hardly worth the bother.

The move will certainly benefit Beckham. It will probably benefit Tottenham, as it appears that Becks can still produce the goods, and if it benefits Tottenham, it will benefit England, who will see their hero don the Three Lions again.

Galaxy however, will surely be wondering how the deal benefits them, as will the MLS Chiefs.

Beckham was supposed to be an ambassador for the sport, and improve his side, but he seems to have spent as much time at the doctor's as he has spent on the pitch. Whilst this doesn't stop him working to improve the stature of the club or the league, if you don't produce on the pitch, your reputation will suffer.

MLS has started to attract many other star names of late, such as Thierry Henry and Rafael Marquez's move from FC Barcelona to New York Redbulls, and Freddy Ljunberg's move to the Seattle Sounders (though he has since joined Celtic.) Many of their players have started to build reputations of their own as well, due in part to USA's World Cup qualification, as well as loan moves to Europe.

Loan moves for younger players will do such things, and success in Europe will always prove a player's worth, but it also attracts interest.

Since Landon Donovan's successful stint with Everton, many European clubs have attempted to sign him on a permanent deal. Such a move would be disastrous to MLS, and the fear is that Beckham's loan would do the same. While Donovan is USA through and through, therefore more likely to remain in the USA, Beckham is English, and he loves English football.

If Manchester United, just for argument's sake, came knocking for Beckham again, he would probably try to force his way out of Galaxy, and the club, and league, would likely lose their talisman.

Allowing Beckham to play for Tottenham for any measurable length of time could be disastrous for Galaxy and MLS. England fans would love to see Beckham back home, Tottenham fans would love to see him parade in their kit, but if he performed well, it could mean disaster for MLS. Should Beckham leave the USA now, the whole project would have been a waste of time.

Galaxy's proposition to Tottenham seems the best thing for them at this point. Whilst Spurs will feel it is too short a deal, LA have the right to protect their prized asset from injury, along with detracting interest from other clubs. It may well be a case that Tottenham have to like it or lump it. If they don't want Beckham for such a short time, they may not get him at all.

For Beckham, the most important thing is simply to impress in training with Tottenham, and perform well at Galaxy, and perhaps Capello will come calling again. England have the power to scout worldwide for their selections, and if Capello is not willing to send somebody to America to watch Beckham play, or catch a game on TV, then it is possible he is just too stubborn to go back on his word anyway.

Hopefully it will work out for all parties. In an ideal world, Tottenham will take Beckham for what time they can, Beckham will play well, return to Galaxy, continue to play well and be picked for England again.

With Capello's future hanging in the balance, it may well be Spurs manager Harry Redknapp in the England hot-seat before long. Beckham should simply do his best to impress everybody, and keep people on his side.
